What is FFA?
The condition known as Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA) has only been recognised relatively recently in the medial arena with the number of reported cases increasing. The cause of FFA is unknown. It is thought that hormones may be partially responsible, as it typically affects post-menopausal women and can occur alongside genetic hair loss (also known as androgenetic or female pattern hair loss). What has been confirmed is that the body’s immune system is affected, especially T-lymphocytes – a type of white blood cell. In layman’s terms when the body mounts an immune response, this causes inflammation which eventually destroys the hair follicles sadly.
FFA is scarring alopecia so the skin has a different texture and the hair line slowly sinks back. Skin can be shiny and thick in appearance.
